Google Alerts – Every major media company in Canada (CBC, CTV, the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star etc) will sometimes run stories about Oshawa and/or the Durham Region but not regularly enough for any of the above to be considered a local news source. But Google Alerts can be very handy and are easy to set up. It basically works like a Google search, but every time there are important new search results, they are emailed to you. This is usually done once per day with all of the new results but it will ask you when you set it up how often you want new results.
So, for example, if you create an alert for Oshawa it will send you any story that mentions Oshawa. If you want stories about Oshawa but not sports stories then you put a minus sign ( – ) in front of the words you don’t want. Oshawa -sports -hockey will give you stories about Oshawa that aren’t related to the Generals. If you work for General Motors and want stories about GM you can search for General Motors or even General Motors +Oshawa. The latter will give you only stories about General Motors and Oshawa.
